The Authority for Public Services Regulation is responsible for regulating the electricity sector and some aspects of the water sector. It was established by Article (19) of The Law for the Regulation and Privatisation of the Electricity and Related Water Sector promulgated by Royal Decree 78/2004 on 1 August 2004 and amended by Royal Decree 59/2009 and 47/2013.
The Authority believes that helping customers to know their rights is essential to ensure that the electricity companies fulfill their obligations towards them and provide high quality services in order to protect their interests. The Authority requires electricity suppliers to prepare Codes of Practices and Procedures that must be approved by the Authority, in relation to key service areas and to publish these Codes and Procedures as booklets available to all customers, on request.
The electricity and related water sector in the Sultanate of Oman comprises three separate and distinct market segments: the Main Interconnected System (“MIS”) in the north of Oman; the Rural System of the Rural Areas Electricity Company (RAEC); and the Dhofar Power System (DPS).
The Renewable Energy Initiative aims to promote the use of clean solar energy to create a sustainable source for Oman and future generations. This initiative is based on the installation of solar panels in residential units to use the sun's rays to generate electricity
